Tips

Arrange your workspace
A piece of Vellux blanket is an excellent beading surface. Pour your beads into small, manageable piles on the Vellux and place your pattern in an easy to access spot. Make sure you have good lighting.
Begin your project with a basic "stop" bead at the end of your thread
Place a bead on the thread and then loop back through it to secure the end of the thread and help keep your beads from falling off.
Make sure you have enough beads and thread of the same color to complete the project. Nothing is worse than running out of a bead color halfway through!
Keep a couple of spare needles around, just in case.
When using large, chunky beads, separate them with a single smaller bead to make it easier to bend around the wrist.
Standard Jewelry Lengths
Choker: 15-16"
Princess necklace: 18-20"
Matinee necklace: 23-27"
Bracelet: 7"
Anklet: 9-10"
A bead board makes it possible to see what a design will look like before you string it. Start a design in the center and work toward the ends. The numbers on the board tell you how long the finished design will be.
Altoids tins make great portable bead kits. A small bobbin of Nymo fits nicely. Add a magnetic strip for needles to stick to, fold up scissors, and beads and you will never be without your beadwork!!

Bead It

When you think of beading, you really ought to think of us. Why? We're glad you asked. Creative Habitat has beads, that's why. No, not just plastic pony beads to do kids crafts (though we do have those, too. Aisle 24, if you're looking), but tons of beads, from the Dress It Up bead company to the prestigious Swarovski Crystals. Organized beautifully on a beaded wall of color, it'll be easier than ever to find coordinating beads to match your new favorite shirt.

If you're really into beading, then you know that it's not just about the beads, it's about the accessories (that's so true with everything). Without the tools, the Beadalon, the crimps and clasps, you've got nothing to hold those beads together! We've got all those things, too. And if you're itching to bead but lacking inspiration, you'll be happy to find books of bright ideas and a helpful associate. No need to thank us; it's just what we do.

What's the best thing about us? New stuff is coming in all the time!  One of our favorites are findings from TierraCast. If you haven't heard of TierraCast yet, then you'll be the first of our friends to know about this great American company that produces lead-free and food-grade quality materials. That means jewelry that's safe for your kids.

Oh, one more thing! You won't want to miss BAM, our Beaders Anonymous Meeting. Bring your beads, bring your tools, and bring home a happy feeling. On the first and third Wednesdays of the month, it's the place where beaders get their fix.

New for June!
